The Radio On Low

Half past six, and the kettle has already gone once. She fills the bowl, drops the flannel in to warm, and waits with her hand on the rim. Cold water on her mother's face starts the whole day wrong, and they both found that out the hard way.

The radio sits on the windowsill turned down so low it is more of a suggestion than a station. She hums along without deciding to. Her mum's shoulders come down when there is a tune in the room, and nobody taught her that. She noticed it one morning and she has never turned the radio off since.

There is no lanyard on the hook by the door any more. There is a folder next to the toaster, and a plastic box with the days of the week printed on the lids, and an alarm at nine for the pharmacy.

Some mornings her mum calls her by her sister's name. She says yes love, and carries on with the flannel, and does not correct her, because correcting her costs more than it is worth before breakfast.

She prays on the stairs. She has prayed about the same thing every week for four years, since the week she handed her notice in, and she has never once said out loud to another human being that she stopped expecting an answer somewhere along the way.

Then she comes down and the laptop her nephew left is still open, and there is a page on it with words across the top that say faith over poverty, and she looks at the folder by the toaster and thinks: well. My faith is fine, thank you. That folder is not.

And if that is not close enough to your own kitchen, you would have closed this by now. So let us be honest about the sign over the door before we go anywhere near what to do about it.

What the name over this door does not mean

Faith over poverty does not mean faith removes poverty. It never has meant that. There is no arrangement anywhere in the Bible where believing harder converts into an amount, and if somebody told you there was, they told you something Scripture does not say, and it has cost you four years of quietly wondering what is wrong with you.

Let me name the weight properly, because it has been carried without a name for a long time, and it is not the folder by the toaster. It is the second thing, the one growing underneath it: the suspicion that a proper believer would not still be here. That there is a key somebody else was handed and you were not. That other people pray and things move, and you pray on a staircase and the folder stays exactly as thick as it was.

That suspicion is a lie and I am not going to be gentle with it for one sentence. You are a woman with a real and working faith, standing at a sink at half past six, and I am not saying my own kind opinion over you: the written word says the inner self is being renewed day by day while the outer one wastes away, and it is the Holy Spirit doing that renewing in you this morning, on the mornings you can feel it and on the mornings you cannot.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.2 Corinthians 4:16

Paul wrote that in a life that did not come right. Read on a little and he is listing what he is up against, and not one item on the list is being lifted off him while he writes. The renewing he describes is not the outside changing. It is something happening on the inside of a person while the outside stays exactly as difficult as it was.

So take the honest half and the other half in the same breath, because the correction usually swings too far and leaves a person believing faith does nothing at all. You have a faith that is not moving that folder, and at the same moment you have a faith that is doing the precise thing Scripture says it does, which is holding a person on to God across four years that would have loosened a firmer grip, and it is the Spirit holding you there and not the strength in your fingers.

What your faith is actually doing at half past six

Not paying the folder. Let us have that said plainly, and then let us look at what it is doing, because it is not nothing, and it has been undervalued in that kitchen for years.

Your faith is the reason you pray on the stairs. It is the reason the radio stays on low. It is the reason you said yes love and did not correct her, which is a kindness nobody applauded and nobody wrote down. It is the reason you have not concluded that God is a story people tell, which is honestly the simpler position from where you are standing.

You are doing something the written word already has a name for, and the name is not small faith. Paul called it a work of faith, a labor of love and a steadfastness of hope (1 Thessalonians 1:3), and he put it at the top of a letter he opened by thanking God for the people doing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you at it week after week on a landing where nobody could see you.

Nobody who has never warmed a flannel at half past six gets to tell you your faith is weak. And nobody, me included, gets to tell you it is about to be answered with an amount, because that is a promise nobody on this page was ever authorized to make.

What is settled is not the folder. This is yours and it was settled somewhere else entirely: your worth was fixed by what Christ paid rather than by anything you earn, the written word settles it in exactly those terms, and His Spirit is the witness of it inside you on the days you feel nothing at all.

Poverty does not get the last word about you

Here is what the sign over the door does claim, and it claims it honestly.

Poverty does not get to defeat your faith. It does not get to decide what you are worth. It does not get to be the closing sentence on your life, because there is a longer document than the folder by the toaster, and God wrote it.

You were bought at a price that was never counted in coin. Peter put it in writing that you were ransomed not with perishable things such as silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18 and 19), and the Holy Spirit does not wait for your circumstances to improve before He agrees with that about you.

And if any of this is at the point of real danger, a home going, a family going without food, or a day when you cannot see how to keep going, then reach for real help today and reach for it without an ounce of shame. That is not a failure of faith. Faith has hands, and this is what hands are for.
