Delroy signs off the first half at ten past eleven, and by the time he has walked the length of the yard the depot is nearly empty, because everybody sensible has gone home.
He does not go home. Home is forty minutes on two buses he is not driving, and he would only have to turn round and come straight back.
So he does what he has done for four years. He takes his own mug out of the cupboard, the one with his name on a strip of tape, he fills it at the urn, and he sits in the seat by the window at the long table, facing out over the yard where the cleaners are hosing down the airport bus.
This is where he prays. Not at home, where there is always somebody wanting something, and not at church, where he is on the door and never once gets to sit down. Here. Middle of the split, vending machine humming, a football result on a television nobody is watching.
He has prayed the same thing at this table for four years. He knows the shape of it the way his hands know a wheel.
And this morning he opens his mouth and it does not come out.
Not because he has gone cold on God. It is that he has said this sentence so many times it has gone smooth, like the handle of a flask, and there is nothing left on it to grip. He gets as far as Lord, You know about, and then he stops, and the vending machine hums, and his tea goes cold in a mug with his own name taped on the side of it.
Then he notices something, and it does not comfort him at first, it only puzzles him. He came anyway. He walked past the rest room and down the corridor and sat in that seat facing the yard, the way he has for four years, and he opened his mouth. Nobody made him do it. Nothing came of it. He did it anyway.
And that is where you are, or you would not have opened this.

The Honors List Has People On It Who Never Got It
Let me take the name over this door apart before we go anywhere else, because leaving it whole has been quietly costing you.
Faith over poverty does not mean faith removes poverty. It has never meant that. If somebody handed you that arrangement, they handed you something the Bible does not sell, and it has cost you years of wondering privately what is wrong with you.
There is a chapter people call the honors list of faith. It moves through the names you would expect, Abraham and Sarah and Moses and Rahab, and then, near the end, it stops naming and starts describing, and the description is not what a person expects to find in an honors list.
"They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated, of whom the world was not worthy."Hebrews 11:37 and 38
And then comes the sentence I want in your hands this morning, and I want it there before anything else in this article touches you.
"And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised."Hebrews 11:39
Commended, and did not receive. Both halves, about the same people, in one line, written down and kept in the book for everybody to read.
So hear this where you are sitting. You are not the awkward exception to that chapter. You are standing in the middle of it, among people God Himself commended and did not lift out of it, and Hebrews 11:39 put the two halves in a single sentence so that no believer in any century would have to pretend the promise had arrived in order to be counted faithful. This is not my kind thought over you. It is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like that land as relief instead of as a technicality.
Now notice what is missing from that verse, because the silence in it is deliberate. No explanation is offered for why they did not receive. No hint of a step anybody missed. Not one syllable pinning it on the quality of their believing. The record says they were commended and they did not get it, and then it goes on with the story.
What Your Faith Is Doing At That Table
So then what is it doing, if it is plainly not doing the thing everybody said it would do?
Begin where nobody begins, which is with the table itself. Your faith is the reason there is a table at all. It is the reason a man in an empty canteen opens his mouth in the direction of a God he cannot see, four years after the last time anything visible happened. Nothing in the world requires that. There is no social pressure at half past eleven in an empty depot.
You have held on to God through a stretch of weather that has loosened the grip of people with far easier lives, and Scripture does not file that under small faith. It calls it endurance, and James 1:12 calls the one who endures blessed, and the Spirit who has been holding you up in it is not standing over you with a mark scheme.
And hear the second half of that, because this is exactly where the correction swings too far and leaves a person concluding that faith does nothing whatsoever. Your faith is not a lever. It was never a lever. It is a hold.
You are holding on to a real God with a real grip in weather that has taken other people's hands clean off the rail, and the written word calls that the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1), and His Spirit is the one who has kept your fingers where they are while you assumed you were managing it yourself.
Nobody who has never done this arithmetic gets to tell you your faith is thin. And nobody, including me, gets to tell you it is about to be exchanged for an amount, because that is a promise no writer was ever authorized to make.
Poverty Does Not Get To Write The Last Line
Here is what the name over this door actually claims, and it claims it honestly, without one word of decoration.
Poverty does not get to defeat your faith. It does not get to decide what you are worth. It does not get the last line about your life, because there is a longer document than a bank statement and God is the one holding the pen.
You are worth what Christ paid, and that was settled somewhere else entirely and long before the arithmetic in your house went wrong. Romans 8:16 says His Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, and that witness does not go quiet on the mornings you cannot feel a single thing.
And if this has come to the point of real danger, a home about to go, or children going without food, then reach for real help today and reach for it with your head up. That is not a lapse in faith. Faith has hands, and using them is what hands are for.
Jesus set the measure at a seed in Matthew 17:20, and the smallness was never a comment on how much anybody had. It was a statement about what kind of thing faith is. Not a weight to be put on a scale and found wanting, but something said out loud with a mouth.
You have the standing to speak, and it is given to you in Christ rather than issued on the strength of what is in your account, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a plain sentence at a canteen table something other than a man talking to himself.
What gets spoken here is not an instruction to a bank. It is the truth about God, said out loud by somebody who is short, and that is the oldest form of worship there is.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you are sitting. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what you have in the bank. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Shortfall I have carried four years, you are real and you are not the last line of my story. Hebrews 11:39 puts men and women in the honors list of faith who were commended and did not receive what was promised, and God wrote them in exactly as they stood. In the name of Jesus I call you by your right name, and I do not hand you my trust.
- Suspicion that I am missing a key, you are not God's opinion of me and you have no seat at this table. The written word puts the destitute and the ill-treated in the honors list and never once calls that faith a failure, and the Holy Spirit bears witness in me that I belong to Christ. My faith is a hold and not a lever, and it has held.
- Lord, You are the God who commends a faith that never got what it asked for, and Hebrews 11 keeps that on record with Your own name over the top of it. I thank You, because four years of walking back to the same table was Your keeping and not my grip. I say who You are out loud first, and I am not waiting for the second sentence to change before I say the first.
