The hall is one enormous noise. Thirty children, a bouncy castle with a fan going, somebody's playlist, and a woman on a microphone trying to get them all to sit down for the cake. She is at the long table with the other parents, holding a paper cup of squash she did not want, laughing in the right places.
And underneath the noise she is running the sum.
The boiler made a new sound this morning. Not a loud sound. A sort of knock, twice, when the heating came on, and then nothing. She heard it while she was putting a wash on and she has been carrying it around all day like a small stone in a shoe. Because the boiler is fifteen years old and there is nothing set aside. Nothing. Not a fortnight, not a weekend, and if that boiler goes then the whole arrangement she has been holding together with both hands since spring simply comes apart, and she can see exactly how, in order, step by step, and she has seen it eleven times today already.
Somebody down the table says something funny and she laughs, genuinely, and then she is back in the sum before the laugh has finished.
You know that room. Maybe not a birthday party. Maybe it is a shift changeover, or a waiting area, or a table at somebody's house on a Friday, and you are entirely present and also somewhere else, running a collapse in the background like a program you cannot close.
And I want to say the important thing before anything else. The sum is not stupid. Your fear is not silly, it is not faithlessness, and it is not something to repent of. You have run the numbers because the numbers are real, and there genuinely is no buffer, and one thing going wrong genuinely would be very bad. Nobody is going to tell you on this page that you are imagining it.

What He actually said, and what He did not
There is a sentence of Jesus about tomorrow that everybody has heard and almost nobody has read closely, and reading it closely is the most practical thing I can do for you tonight.
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.Matthew 6:34
Look at what He does not say. He does not say tomorrow will be fine. He does not say the boiler will hold. He does not promise a smooth road, and He does not tell anybody that nothing will go wrong, and anybody handed a version of this verse that says so was handed something Jesus never spoke, and the Spirit of God does not comfort a frightened person with a promise He did not make.
What He actually says is that the day has trouble in it and that the trouble is enough for the day. That is not a man being cheerful about hardship. That is a man being extremely honest about it, and then doing something with the weight: taking tomorrow's portion out of your hands, tonight, on the grounds that it has not arrived and you have not been issued the strength for it yet.
So hear this over you where you are sitting. You have today's strength, all of it, and you have not been given tomorrow's, and that is not a shortage; it is what is written about how God supplies, and His Spirit is not withholding anything from you tonight.
He never once handed anybody a fortnight
There is an old picture of this and it is one of the strangest arrangements in the whole Bible.
A whole nation in a desert, fed with something that arrived on the ground each morning. And the instruction was: take what you need for today. Not a week. Not a store. And when some of them kept a portion back overnight, it spoiled by morning.
I want to be careful with that story, because it can be told badly. It is not a lesson that going without is holy, and it is not God announcing that His people should live with nothing behind them. It is certainly not me telling you that bread will be on the ground for you in the morning, because I do not know that, and nobody who tells you they do is worth listening to.
Here is what it does say. God is not embarrassed by daily. He built a whole nation's life around a supply that came one day at a time, and He did not consider that a lesser arrangement or a punishment or a sign that something had gone wrong. A person living without a store is not living outside God's design. You have been reading your own unbuffered life as evidence of a fault, and Scripture does not read it that way at all, and His Spirit is not standing over you tonight with an opinion about your margin.
Planning is not the same thing as rehearsing
Now let me separate two things that have been sitting on top of each other, and once they come apart you get your evening back.
Planning is good. Planning is wise and God has never had a word to say against it. If there is something sensible to be done about that boiler, do it, and do it in daylight, with a pen, once. Nothing on this page is telling you to be careless, and I would never tell a person with real pressure on them to stop thinking.
Rehearsing is different. Rehearsing is running the same collapse for the fortieth time at half past eleven with the lights off. It produces no plan. It has never once produced a plan. It is not preparation, it is a film you keep watching, and it takes tomorrow's grief and charges you for it tonight at full price, and you pay, and tomorrow you will pay again for the real thing if it comes.
The difference is simple. A plan ends. A rehearsal loops.
You have permission to close it, and it is not denial and it is not pretending: what is written puts tomorrow into the hands of the God who is already standing in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that possible to obey at half past eleven at night when your chest is going.
Something can happen tonight, in the room you are actually in, and it does not require one figure on any page to change.
You are held by a God who is already standing in tomorrow, and it is Scripture, not optimism, that puts the day's trouble in the day it belongs to, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a sentence like that past the noise in your chest. Nothing is being asked of you. Nothing is being promised to you about the money either, and I will not insult you with one.
So speak. Out loud, in this room. Not to make it true, because it was true before you opened this page. Speak because a thing said with the mouth stops being a hope you are holding and becomes ground you are standing on, and God's people have always found their footing that way.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with your mouth. The standing to say them is yours, because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and nothing about an empty account changes where a person is seated. What tomorrow holds is His to decide, and however He answers over the boiler and the year, these lines are true tonight. They rest on what is written in Matthew 6 rather than on anything I can promise you, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the sound of your voice, who takes them all the way down.
- Noise in the boiler this morning, you are a problem and you are not a prophecy, and I am not letting you write the rest of my year. Jesus said in Matthew 6:34 that the day has its own trouble and that the day's trouble is enough for it, so you are tomorrow's business and tomorrow is not open yet. In the name of Jesus I put you down until daylight.
- Rehearsal I run every night, you are switched off, and you do not get to charge me twice for a thing that has not happened. A plan ends and you loop, and forty viewings have never once produced a single useful decision. I have today's strength for today, which is what stands written about the way God supplies, and today is the only day I have ever actually been given.
- My God, You are already standing in tomorrow, where Matthew 6:34 says the day's own trouble is waiting for the day, and You did not need me to go on ahead and check it. You know the sum, You know the fifteen year old boiler, and You have never once told me my fear was silly. Tomorrow belongs to You and tonight belongs to sleep, and I am handing You the calculation with both hands and leaving it there.
