Grace Comes Dated

The extractor goes off and the shop goes quiet all at once, and that is the moment she has learned to dread, because the quiet is where the thinking lives.

The shutter is half down. He is out the back with the bins and the crates. She wipes a counter she has already wiped, because there is a film that starts at this hour every night, and wiping keeps it off for about another minute.

Then it starts anyway. The fridge goes, or the fryer does, or the van fails its test in the spring. And under all of it the meter in the back hallway, still going, and the standing charges that run on whether the door opened today or it did not.

She follows the film all the way down, the same way every night, past the bit where they cannot make it work and out the other side to the shutter staying down for good and somebody else's name over the window.

She has run it every night this year. It has never had a different ending, and she has never once come down in the morning and found the ending had happened while she slept.

He puts his head round the door and asks if she is coming up. Two minutes, she says. Then she stands in the dark shop and runs it one more time, because she thinks that watching for it is part of keeping it away.

They prayed about this. They pray about it. And the film starts at the same hour anyway, in a shop that has gone quiet, and neither of them has ever said out loud that it happens.

You have your own version and it starts at a particular time of night. Let us go and look at what it actually is, because it is not what you have been calling it.

The plan is not the film

There are two different things happening in that shop after the fan goes off, and they have been going under one name for a long time.

The first is planning. Somebody looked at what happens if the fridge goes, thought it through, decided what they would do, and finished. That is stewardship, and Scripture has nothing but respect for the person who counts the cost before they build (Luke 14:28). Nobody is going to ask you to stop doing that, and any voice that tells you a person of faith would not think ahead is not speaking from the written word.

The second thing is not planning. It decides nothing. It reaches no new conclusion, it produces no action, and it arrives at the same ending it arrived at last night. That is rehearsal, and rehearsing a collapse is a rent you are paying on a day that has not come and may never come.

Hear this, because it matters more than the distinction does: you are not a fearful person for seeing it clearly. You are a person who can count, in a situation that genuinely does not have a buffer under it, and the written word never once calls accurate arithmetic unbelief. His Spirit is not standing over you tonight with a mark scheme. He is standing in a quiet shop with a woman who is tired.

Grace comes dated

Here is the thing nobody explains, and it changes what tonight is.

Grace arrives dated. It is issued for the day it is for.

As thy days, so shall thy strength be.Deuteronomy 33:25

Read what that actually promises. Not a stockpile. Not a reserve you can check on and feel reassured by. Strength that matches the day, arriving with the day, and the mercies of God are described the same way: they are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23), which means they are not old by tonight and they are not early either.

So when you stand in a dark shop at closing and try to feel strong enough for a day that has not arrived, you are reaching for something the written word says has not been issued yet, and His Spirit does not hand out a ration early to settle an argument in somebody's head. And then you find you do not feel strong enough for it, and you read that as a report on your faith or a forecast about your family.

It is neither. It is a delivery schedule.

You have today's strength, in full, and you have had it all day: that is what got the shutter up this morning and kept a smile on for a queue at the door. The written word says it comes as the days come, and His Spirit is the one who brings it, on time, every time, to the day it belongs to.

Sufficient is not the same as comfortable

Paul asked God three times to take a thing away. It was not taken away.

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9

Look hard at that word sufficient, because it is doing exact work. It does not mean plentiful. It does not mean comfortable. It does not mean the pressure came off, and Paul is the proof of that, because the pressure did not come off him and he is the one writing it down.

Sufficient means it holds. It means what is given is enough to get the person through the actual day they are in, and no more than that, and never less than that either.

And notice what is not in the passage. There is no suggestion that Paul asked wrongly, no hint that a fourth request would have worked, no key he missed. He asked, plainly and repeatedly, and asking was right, and I am not going to stand here and tell you the answer he got is the answer you are getting. What God does about your shop is His, and nothing on this page knows.

What I do know is what He said, and it was said to a man who was not relieved: you are given enough for today, and His power finds its way to its full strength in exactly the place you feel weakest, and His Spirit is the one who carries that written word into a body that is running on tired.

If any of this has reached the point of real danger, a home at risk or a family going without, then reach for real help tomorrow and reach for it without a shred of shame. That is not a lapse of faith. It is what faith does with its hands.
