The lights come on a section at a time as she moves and go off again behind her, so she works inside a traveling square of light in a dark building.
Fifth floor. Bins, the desks, a mug somebody never takes home, the patch of carpet under the meeting room table where the biscuits happen.
Nothing else in the building is awake. The heating does not come on for another hour and she can see her own breath at the far window.
The orange light came up on the dashboard on Tuesday, on the hill by the retail park, and it has stayed on since.
So while she does the fifth floor, she runs it. The light, then the garage, then no car, then no early start, then not this building, then not the other one either, then the rest of it. She gets all the way to the end. She has been to the end of it a great many times and it always ends the same way.
And she is not being irrational. Nobody ever says that part to her. There is nothing behind her, every link in that chain is real, and she has checked each one of them more than once.
Then she straightens up at the long window and the sky over the car park has stopped being black and started being a color.
She is standing in a building where the morning has not arrived yet. That is the hour she does her worst arithmetic in, and I do not believe that is an accident.
If yours gets done at that hour as well, stay with me.

This fear is accurate, and it is not unbelief
Let me get one thing out of the way first, because it has been sitting on your chest and it never should have been put there.
That fear is not a failure of faith. It is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is right. You have no buffer, one thing going wrong genuinely does move the whole row, and a person who can see that clearly is not a person of small faith, they are a person with working eyes. You are not being told off on this page. Scripture nowhere treats a clear look at a real danger as unbelief, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over you waiting for you to pretend the row is not there.
And nobody here is telling you to stop planning either. Planning is good and ordinary work and it belongs to the daylight. What I want to talk about is something else entirely: why the same chain is loudest in the hour before the light, and what is actually true about that hour.
Awake in the building before the cleaner was
Two lines, written centuries apart by two men who both knew the small hours.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22 and 23
He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.Psalm 121:3 and 4
Hold them together and two things come out of them. Mercy is issued morning by morning, which means there is a stretch of time before it is in anybody's hand, and that stretch is real and it is where you have been living. And the One doing the issuing does not sleep, which means that the empty building at five o'clock has never once been empty.
You are not alone on the fifth floor, and you were not alone at three either. The written word says your Keeper does not so much as doze, and His Spirit has been in every hour you thought you were getting through on your own. There is no lonely shift on the record.
That is why the arithmetic is loudest before the light. You are awake inside the gap, reaching forward into a day that has not started, feeling for a strength that has not been issued yet, and finding your hand empty. Scripture is not surprised by that hour and neither is the Holy Spirit, who has kept more people company at five in the morning than anybody has counted.
Mercy is dated for the day it is used
Here is the sentence that took me longest to understand, and it changed that hour for me.
His mercies are new every morning, and the other half of that is this: they are not issued in advance. There is no stockpile of tomorrow in your hand tonight. That is not a fault in the arrangement, it is the arrangement, and it is the same one that carried a whole nation through a wilderness a day at a time.
So when you reach into tomorrow at five in the morning and find nothing there to meet it with, you have not discovered that God has failed. You have discovered the ordinary shape of how He gives. Tomorrow's strength is not missing from your hand. It is dated, and it is dated for the day you will need it.
You have today's portion and it is genuinely enough for today, which is not a small thing to be handed and it is exactly what was promised: My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Holy Spirit is the one who carries that sufficiency into an actual Tuesday, and He has never once left a day of yours to begin without Him in it.
And let me be exact here, because promises have been made to you before and they cost you something. None of that is a statement about the car. I do not know what happens to the car, and nothing on this page knows. What is settled is who is in the building, not what is in the account, and I am not going to blur those two together to make this land more warmly than it should.
The breakthrough is not that the chain is wrong. It might all happen. I will not stand here and tell you that nothing is going to go wrong, because I do not know that, and neither does anybody who has ever said it to you with confidence.
The breakthrough is that tomorrow does not have to be carried tonight, because tomorrow already has Somebody standing in it, and He was there before the thought of it ever reached you.
You have today's strength, in your hand, issued, and it does not run out before the day does. The written word calls His mercies new every morning, which is a sentence about tonight quite as much as it is about the morning, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that a floor to stand on rather than a pleasant line to read.
And the way tomorrow gets put down is not by feeling calm about it. Feelings are slow and they arrive late. It gets put down by naming one true thing about today out loud, and then by not running the film again.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud tonight. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it was not issued on the strength of what you have set aside. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about tomorrow is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Orange light on that dashboard, you are a real fault and you are not a forecast. Scripture says the mercies of the Lord are new every morning and that the One who keeps me does not sleep, and a warning lamp has never been given a vote on what tomorrow holds. In the name of Jesus I am leaving you where you are until the daylight.
- Verdict that I am one thing away from finished, get out of this house. His word says the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases and His mercies are new every morning, and His Spirit has carried me through every three o'clock I have already come through. I am carried tonight, and the hands doing the carrying have never once been asleep.
- Lord, You were awake in this building before I got here and You are standing in tomorrow already. I thank You, because the written word says the One who keeps me will not so much as slumber, and Your Spirit is the reason I know that in my body and not only in my head. I have today's strength for today, and I am putting the rest of it down where You are already standing.
