The Calculation Comes Out The Same

This message is for to face an unbuffered tomorrow without rehearsing the collapse, sitting at the kitchen table at eleven at night after getting her mother settled, with a tooth that has started to ache and nowhere for it to go

Her mother is settled at last. It took the second cup of tea, the good blanket, the story about the dog they had when she was small, told again, told properly.

Now it is eleven at night and the kitchen is hers. One small light on over the cooker. The monitor on the counter hissing gently, and under the hiss, the breathing, which is the sound she listens to all night without meaning to.

She sits down with a cup that has gone cold. And she runs it. She has run it every night for two years and she runs it now, item by item, in her head, in order, the way you go over a route you have already driven.

It comes out the same. It always comes out the same. There is nothing behind it. Not a little. Not a bit put by for emergencies. Nothing.

And then, because it is late and her guard is down, her tongue finds the tooth at the back on the left, and it is still sore, and it has been sore since the weekend.

She sits very still with that. Because she knows exactly what that tooth is. It is not a tooth. It is the whole thing, standing up and showing itself: if one thing goes, everything goes, and there is no version of this where she has anywhere to put it.

She is not being dramatic. That is the part nobody understands. She has done the arithmetic honestly and the arithmetic agrees with her.

And you know that table, and that hour, and that particular quiet, or you would not have opened this.

The Calculation Comes Out The Same

Your fear is not the problem here

Let me get one thing out of the way first, because most religious advice goes straight past you on this.

Your fear is accurate. You are not catastrophizing, you are not being faithless, and you are not failing to trust God. You have looked at a real situation and understood it correctly, and I am not going to insult you by calling that unbelief. Nobody in Scripture gets told off for knowing what is true about their own house, and the Holy Spirit is not standing behind you with a red pen.

So if that is not the problem, what is.

Here it is, and see whether it fits. The problem is not the fear. It is the rehearsal. It is the running of the whole collapse, at eleven at night, alone, in the dark, in advance, on strength that was never issued for it. You are doing tomorrow's suffering tonight on today's supply, and it cannot be done, because there was never any provision made for doing it. The Spirit who supplies the strength supplies it one day at a time, and He does it on purpose.

As thy days, so shall thy strength be. Deuteronomy 33:25. That is the whole promise, and look at how tightly it is drawn. Not strength for the year. Not strength for the collapse you can see coming. Strength for the day, issued into the day, matched to it.

You have today's strength in your hands right now, and it is genuinely enough for today, and it was never going to stretch over a night spent living out a day that has not arrived. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it more than a nice line: He is the one who actually carries a person through a Tuesday.

Grace is not a store cupboard

Here is where I think the misunderstanding sits, and it is an honest one.

We hear a promise about strength and we picture a cupboard. A supply. Something stocked in advance that we could go and count. And because we cannot see the cupboard, and we know exactly how little is behind us in every other sense, we conclude the cupboard is empty too.

But it does not work like a cupboard. It works like the manna did: issued for the day, in the day, and it did not keep. What that means for a woman at a kitchen table is that when you look forward into next month and cannot see how you would survive it, you are looking at a day for which nothing has been issued yet, because you are not in it yet. The Spirit does not issue Thursday's grace on a Tuesday, and that is not stinginess, it is the shape of the thing.

It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22 and 23. New every morning. Not stockpiled. Arriving.

You are held today, and you were held yesterday, and the reason you cannot feel next month's holding is that it has not been handed out yet, not that it is missing. His Spirit is the one who brings it, and He has never once been late to a morning in your life.

And let me say plainly what I am not doing. I am not telling you to stop thinking ahead. Thinking ahead is daylight work, done with a pen, with somebody to talk to, with your eyes open. It is right and it is yours and I am not touching it. What I am talking about is the other thing entirely, the thing that happens at eleven at night with nothing in your hands and nobody to say it to, and does not decide anything, and never has.

He is already in the day that frightens you

You are looking down the line at some future room. Perhaps the tooth. Perhaps the day your mother needs more than you can give. Perhaps the day after that. The written word has Him inside that room already, and His Spirit is the one who gets you as far as its door.

He is in that room. He is not going to arrive there when you do. He is there now, ahead of you, the way He has been ahead of every day you have ever walked into.

Even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you. Isaiah 46:4. Sit with the verbs. Made, bear, carry, deliver. That is God describing Himself as the one doing the lifting, spoken over people who were old and afraid and had no resources for what was coming.

You are carried, and you were carried through the last two years whether or not it felt like carrying, and it is written in that verse rather than in my opinion of your situation. The Spirit who inspired it is the one holding you at the table tonight.

Now, what I will not do. I will not tell you nothing is going to go wrong. Things may go wrong. The tooth may be exactly what you think it is. Nobody writing anything on any page anywhere knows what next month holds for your house, and anyone who tells you otherwise has sold you something. What is settled is not the outcome. What is settled is who is in the room when it comes.

The breakthrough

The change is small enough to actually do, and that is deliberate.

You are not going to stop being afraid because somebody wrote a paragraph. What you are going to do is stop paying tomorrow's bill with tonight's strength, because that is the transaction that has been quietly ruining you, and it is one you have the authority to refuse.

The authority is not a technique. It is yours in Christ, and the reason you can speak to your own night is that He has already spoken over it. Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee. Psalm 55:22. Cast is a physical word. It means a thing leaves your hands and lands somewhere else, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a real transfer rather than a nice thought.

You have permission tonight to leave a calculation unfinished. Not solved. Unfinished. It will still be there in the morning, and in the morning you will have the morning's strength for it, which is the only strength it was ever going to be met with.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the table, at whatever hour it is. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it is not issued on the strength of what you have behind you, because you have nothing behind you and it is still yours. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about tomorrow is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.

  1. Tomorrow with nothing set aside, you are real and you are not mine to carry tonight. God has written that as my days are, so my strength will be, and He issues it into the morning it is needed for (Deuteronomy 33:25). In the name of Jesus I am setting you down until it is light.
  2. Certainty that I will not hold when it comes, go. His compassions are new every morning, and that is written down rather than hoped for, and it has been true on every morning of the last two years (Lamentations 3:23). His Spirit brings it at first light, and I take it at first light and not before.
  3. Lord, You are already in the day I am afraid of, and You were there before I thought of it. I thank You, because You promised in Your written word to carry me right through to the gray hair, and You have not once handed me a day without the strength for that day in it. Tonight I am naming the one thing that was fine, and the calculation is not getting run again.
