Named By GodIsaiah 62:4

He Has Never Once Used That Word

This message is for to take back God's name for her, sitting at the kitchen table at half past ten filling in a clinic form for the mother she left paid work to look after, after writing one accurate word in a box and hearing where else she has been using it

Half past ten. Her mother is settled, the hall light is on its low setting, and the bedroom door is pushed to rather than shut, which is how they do it now.

The kitchen table has the pre-admission pack on it, four pages, to be brought along on the day.

She works down it. Name of patient. Date of birth. Which of these apply. Next of kin, which is her. Relationship to patient, and she writes daughter, and that one is easy.

Then further down there is a small box for the person completing the form, and above the box it says occupation.

She looks at it for a while. Then she writes None.

It is not even wrong. Nobody has paid her for anything in four years and there is no other word that fits the box. It is the accurate answer and she is not upset about the form.

She puts the pen down anyway, because she has heard that word somewhere else, in her own voice, at two in the morning, at the end of a sentence she was saying to God. Not on paper. In a prayer. It's only me. There's not much here.

And the form is the accurate part. The prayer is the part that is not true, and in four years nobody has ever said so to her.

So let me be the one who does.

He Has Never Once Used That Word

A description that quietly became a name

Watch how it travels, because it happens to almost everybody and almost nobody catches it.

A word starts out doing an honest job. It describes a circumstance. No income this year. Not working at the moment. Nothing much coming in. Every one of those is a fact about an arrangement, and facts about arrangements are allowed to be said plainly, and this site will never ask you to dress one up.

Then the word gets tired of the small job and takes a bigger one. It stops describing the arrangement and starts describing the person inside it. That is the migration, and it is so quiet that it finishes before anybody notices it has started. You are not careless for having missed it. You have been up in the night for four years, and a word does not announce itself when it changes jobs. Scripture is the only place I know that catches this, and the Holy Spirit is the one who points at the sentence in you and says, that one, look at that one.

Here is how to tell that it has happened. The word turns up at the end of your prayers. Not in the middle, where you are telling Him about the appointment. At the end, in the sign-off, where you quietly account for yourself. It's only me. There's not much here. Sorry for the same thing again.

That sign-off is the thing this message has come for. The form can keep its word. It is a form. But that word has no business at the end of a prayer, and you have every right to take it out tonight, because the written word never once puts it there and the Spirit in you has never agreed with it.

The God who takes names away and gives them

He does this. It is one of the most recognizable things about Him in the whole of Scripture. He takes a name off somebody and puts a different one on.

You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her.Isaiah 62:4

Read what is being changed there and what is not. He is not arguing with the facts on the ground. He is not saying the land was doing fine all along and everybody misread the situation. He is doing something else entirely: He is taking the word that had attached itself to the person, and He is removing it, and He is putting His own word there instead.

That is not a compliment and it is not encouragement. It is an act of authority. The one who names a thing is the one who has the right to, and there is nobody in your kitchen with a higher claim on that than God has. You are named by Him and by nobody else, and the written word says so in the plainest sentence it has: see what kind of love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are (1 John 3:1). His Spirit is the one who bears witness to that in you at two in the morning when you cannot feel it.

Look at the tense in that verse, because it is the whole thing. And so we are. Not becoming. Not once the circumstances improve and there is something on the form. Now, tonight, at the table with the pen down. You are His, and He said so long before you had done a single useful thing, and He has never revised it since. Nothing in Scripture makes His word about a person wait for their week to improve, and the Holy Spirit was not sent to hand out conditions.

Not offered instead of the help still needed

I want to be careful here, because this is the place where a message like this usually goes wrong and does damage.

None of this is offered to you in place of the help you actually need. If there is help you are entitled to, there is nothing about reaching for it that makes your faith any smaller. If there is work you want, that is yours to go after and nothing on this page says otherwise. A true name is not a substitute for a full cupboard, and anybody who hands you one hoping you will stop asking about the other has quietly swapped something on you.

What is being settled here is a different question, and it is the one that has been sitting underneath the other one for four years. Not what you have. Who you are, in front of God, tonight, with the arrangement exactly as it stands. You have a name from Him that was never issued on the basis of your output, and it cannot be withdrawn on that basis either. The written word gave it, and His Spirit keeps it living in you on the days when nothing in the house has changed.

And I am not going to romance any of this. There is nothing beautiful about being tired. Caring for somebody at home is hard work that mostly goes on out of sight, and God is not asking you to enjoy it or to call it a gift in order to qualify for what He says about you.

The breakthrough

The breakthrough is not a feeling and I would not know how to give you one.

It is a swap, and it is made out loud. The word that migrated goes back to the box it came from, where it is only ever a fact about an arrangement, and God's word about you goes where it belongs, which is at the end of the prayer where the apology has been sitting.

You have the standing to make that swap right now, and it is not issued on the strength of anything on the form. It is yours in Christ, and Scripture says that to everyone who received Him He gave the right to be called a child of God (John 1:12), which is a right handed over and never a wage worked for. The Holy Spirit is what makes saying it a real exchange rather than a nice thought at a kitchen table.

And say it while nothing has changed. That is not a compromise, that is the whole point. A name that only works on a good week is not a name, it is a mood, and He did not give you one of those.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at your own table. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of what you earn or what you manage. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.

  1. Word I wrote in the occupation box, you are accurate about a form and you have no jurisdiction over me. Isaiah 62:4 has God taking a name off somebody and putting His own word there instead, and the written word has never once been overruled by a box on a page. In the name of Jesus I am handing you back to the paperwork you came from.
  2. Rule that a person has to earn a name, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says see what kind of love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are, and His Spirit bears witness to it in me at two in the morning when I cannot feel a thing. I am His, and He said so before I had done one useful thing.
  3. Lord, You have never once used that word about me and I am not going to keep using it in front of You. I thank You, because Your love was given before my week improved, and what Scripture says about me has never once been revised since, and Your Spirit has been holding that sentence open in front of me all this time. I am saying my own name out loud tonight, and then what You call me, and nothing after it.
