The register office has a radiator that ticks, a plant nobody waters, and a chair with one arm lower than the other. They are the first appointment after ten.
The baby is asleep in the sling, chin down, one fist out. They took a long time over her name and they are not sorry about any of it. It came down from her great grandmother, it means something they can say out loud, and they said it to each other in the kitchen long before they said it to anybody.
The registrar asks for the child's name and he says it aloud in a room with a stranger in it for the first time. She types it. Then she asks for his: full name, date of birth, place of birth, occupation. He answers all four, and he hears himself hesitate on the last one, the way a foot hesitates on a stair that is not there.
The printer runs. She slides the certificate across the desk and there it is. The child's name near the top. His own name lower down, in the same ink, in the same weight of type, on the same page, put there by the same hand.
He folds it into the plastic wallet and they walk back. Second floor, the door that sticks. The bedroom's outside wall has a dark bloom in the corner that keeps coming back through everything they put on it, so the basket has been in the front room since the spring and the bedroom door stays shut in the daytime.
That night he says her name to her over and over, the way you do, in the voice people keep only for babies, and he means every syllable of it.
And somewhere in the middle of that he notices the other thing. They took all that care over her name. He has taken none at all over his own. He has let a corner of a wall do the naming of him, and he never once sat down and agreed to it, which is exactly how it happened.
You have done that with something too, or you would not have opened this.

Nobody sat down and agreed to this
Let me name it before anything gets lifted, because a thing lifted before it is named comes straight back down again.
You did not decide to start calling yourself that. Nobody ever does. It settles the way silt settles in slow water: not all at once, with no moment anybody could point at, and then one season the shape of the bottom has changed and that is simply the shape of it now.
It gets in through something small. The pause before the last answer. The word a man adds to the front of his own name when nobody asked him for one. And once it is in, it does the naming quietly and daily and never has to say anything out loud again.
So let me be exact about who has been doing that naming, because it has not been God. You are named already, and you were named long before there was a wall or a flat or a form with a box on it. Ephesians 1:4 says He chose you in Him before the foundation of the world, and the Holy Spirit is the One sent to say that inside you rather than leaving you to work out who you are from the state of a rented room (Romans 8:16).
The order matters and the order is the whole comfort. The naming came first. The circumstances arrived later, and arriving later does not give a thing the authority to rename what was already named.
What He wrote, and where He wrote it
There is a place in Isaiah where God is speaking to people who had quietly concluded that He had forgotten them, and what He says back has hands in it.
Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands, your walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:15 and 16
Read what He reaches for first. A nursing baby and a mother. He picks the one bond on earth that never needs reminding, the one that wakes before the cry finishes, and then He says His own is stronger than that.
Then the hands. Engraved is not the same word as written. Written comes off with a cloth. Engraved is cut in, and it is cut into the hand that does the lifting and the holding, so He cannot pick anything up without it being there.
Now the last line, and I will handle it honestly, because it is about walls. Your walls are continually before Me. That is not a repair estimate and I refuse to turn it into one. It is God telling a people who felt forgotten that the state of their walls was never once out of His sight.
So you are held in front of Him continually, damp corner and all, and none of it has ever made Him look away. Isaiah 49:16 is where that is written down rather than felt, and the Holy Spirit is the One who makes it a real thing in a flat with the bedroom door shut, instead of a nice fact about somebody in a book.
A name is not a consolation prize
I know how this can sound from inside that hallway, so let me get in front of it before it curdles.
Nobody here is offering you a name instead of a dry room. The wall is still wet. The flat is still the flat. Nothing on this page moves either of them, and what God does about that corner is His, however He answers, and I do not know.
But that is not the swap being offered, because there is no swap. What is being handed to you is not the smaller thing you get because the bigger thing did not come. You are a child of God, right now, in that flat, tonight, and it is a legal standing rather than a feeling: John 1:12 says He gave the right to become children of God to all who received Him, and 1 John 3:1 names the reason out loud as love, and the Holy Spirit is what turns that from a doctrine you nod at into your own name in your own mouth.
Two things stand up at the same time in that hallway, and they always have. The wall is real. The name is older, and it will still be standing when the building is not.
Here is the turn, and it happens in your mouth rather than in your circumstances, which is the only reason it is available tonight.
A name that is never said out loud gets outvoted. That corner speaks every single day. It speaks when the door is opened, it speaks when the basket is carried through, and it has been getting an unopposed run at a good man for a long time. Jesus set the measure of faith at a seed in Matthew 17:20 and then told the man to speak to the mountain, and He did not tell him to think at it, because thinking was never the appointed means.
So the name gets said. Out loud, in the room, by the person it belongs to.
You have the standing to say it. It was given to you in Christ and it was never issued on the strength of an address, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a name spoken in a small front room more than a man reassuring himself. Psalm 139:16 says every one of your days was written in His book before there was one of them, and a God who wrote the days knew the name of the man who would live them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing where you are, quietly if the baby is asleep. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of the room you are speaking in. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about that wall is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Wall behind that bedroom door, you are damp, you are real, and you are not my name. Isaiah 49:16 says my walls are continually before Him, and He said that to people who had decided He had stopped looking. In the name of Jesus I call you what you are, a wall in a flat, and I take my name back out of your corner.
- Agreement I made with that corner without ever sitting down to make it, you are canceled in the name of Jesus, and you have no authority to name a man God has already named. The written word says the Lord knows those who are His, and His Spirit says it inside me on the mornings I feel like nothing at all. My name goes back where the registrar put it, on the page, in the same ink as hers.
- Father, You engraved me on Your hands before I could hold a pen, and You have never needed my address to know which one I am. I thank You, because You chose me before the foundation of the world, and that is written down and it is not up for review tonight. I am saying my own name out loud in a room You are already standing in.
