Half nine at night on the harbor front and he is sitting in the car with the engine off, because the car is warmer than the flat and because this is where he used to start his day.
The phone is face up on the passenger seat. Nothing has come through on it since Tuesday. A van shift, a house clearance, two hours moving a kitchen: that is the shape of the work now, and it arrives or it does not, and nobody ever tells you why it stopped.
Across the water the ice plant is boarded up. There is a new bollard set in concrete where the crane used to stand, and the fish market has a padlock on it that has been there since the November the boats went.
He is not crying and he is not praying. He is running the sequence. If the car goes, there is no way to reach a job. If there is no way to reach a job, then the phone stops mattering. If the phone stops mattering, then. He has run this one maybe forty times this month and it always stops at the same place, because the end of it is not a thought, it is a feeling in the chest.
And here is what is also true, sitting in that same car in that same minute. The tide is coming in. The chip shop light is on and there are two lads outside it laughing about something. Nobody is ill. Nothing has actually gone wrong tonight.
He cannot make himself notice that. He has tried. It slides straight off, because the part of him that is awake at half nine is not looking at tonight at all.
You have run your own sequence today. You know exactly where yours stops.

He asked three times and the thorn stayed
I want to take you to a man who asked God for something plainly and did not get it, because the whole of this rests on what happened next.
Paul had a thing in his life he called a thorn. Whatever it was, it hurt, and it was not going anywhere on its own, and he did what any of us would do. He asked God to take it away. He asked three times, which is the shape a man's prayer takes when he means it.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.2 Corinthians 12:9
Read that answer slowly, because it is not the one Paul asked for. God did not remove it. He did not explain it. He did not tell Paul when it would end. What He said was: what I am giving you is enough for what you are carrying.
Now hear this where you are sitting, with the engine off. That word was not spoken to a special case. You are inside the same sentence tonight, and the sufficiency in it is not something you are working towards, it is what you are already standing in, because the written word says so and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old line spoken to a tired man in a prison read like it was posted to your street this evening.
I am not going to tell you what God is doing about the money. I do not know, and the page that claims to know is selling you something. I am telling you what He said He gives, and He said sufficient.
You cannot feel Thursday's strength on a Tuesday
Here is the thing nobody explains, and it costs people years.
You are trying to feel strong enough for a day you are not standing in. That is why it never works. You run the sequence, you get to the drop, and you reach around inside yourself for the strength to face it, and there is nothing there, and you conclude that you will not cope. That conclusion did not come from the Holy Spirit and it is not written anywhere in Scripture.
But of course there is nothing there. It has not been issued yet.
Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.Deuteronomy 33:25
As thy days. Not as thy years. Not as thy worst case. The strength comes matched to the day, on the day, and Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning, which is a delivery schedule and not a poem. Nobody in Scripture was ever handed a fortnight of grace up front to keep in a drawer.
So when you reach forward into Thursday and find nothing, you have not discovered a weakness in yourself. You have discovered that Thursday's grace is not in your hands yet, and it is not meant to be. What you have in your hands is tonight, and tonight you are being carried, and His Spirit is the one doing the carrying whether or not you can feel a thing.
A load is rated for the span it crosses
I have spent my working life around structures, and one thing about them has stayed with me.
Nothing is rated for everything. A beam is rated for the span it crosses, and you do not test it by dropping the whole building on it at once. If you did, it would fail, and the failure would tell you nothing true about the beam.
That is what the sequence does to you every night at half nine. It piles the whole year onto one evening and then reports back that you cannot hold it. Of course you cannot. Nobody is built to carry a year in one sitting, and God has never once asked anybody to.
I am not going to promise you that nothing breaks. That would be a lie and you would know it was a lie by the weekend. What I will say is this, and it is written and it is settled: you have grace rated for the day you are standing in, and you have His presence rated for every day after it, and the Holy Spirit is not going to run out somewhere around the middle of next month. Jesus put it as plainly as it can be put in Matthew 6, that the day has its own trouble and that the day is the unit.
And plan. Please plan. Nothing in this is telling you to stop thinking ahead, because thinking ahead is a good and sober thing that a man does once and writes down. Rehearsing is a different animal. Rehearsing runs the same collapse forty times in the dark and calls it responsibility.
The exchange in that verse is the whole thing, and once you see it you cannot unsee it.
Paul asked for a removal. What he got was a Presence at the exact point of pressure. Not instead of an answer, as a consolation. As the actual answer, and Paul spent the rest of his life saying it was the better one, which is not something a man says lightly about a thorn he asked three times to lose.
That does not make the thorn good. Nothing on this page calls your situation good, and I will not insult you by trying. It makes the pressure the place where He is standing, and He is standing there tonight in a parked car on a harbor front where the crane used to be.
You are not facing tomorrow on your own resources, and you never have been. Scripture says His strength is made perfect in weakness, so the empty feeling in your chest at half nine is not the disqualifier you have been treating it as, and His Spirit is already in the day you are afraid of, because He got there before you did and He was never going to arrive with you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you are sitting. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued against what you have got behind you. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely brave. What God does about the money is His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Quiet phone on the passenger seat, you are tonight's fact and tonight is the only day you have ever been given. Deuteronomy 33:25 says as my days, so shall my strength be, and my strength came matched to this evening and this evening is where I am standing. In the name of Jesus I am setting you down on the ground until morning.
- Sequence I run in the dark at half nine, you come down. His written word says His grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in weakness, so the empty place in my chest is not the verdict I took it for, and His Spirit is already standing in the day I cannot feel. I have carried this far enough for one night and I am not picking it up again.
- Lord, You are already in tomorrow and You did not need me to go on ahead and check it. I thank You, because Your written word says Your mercies are new every morning, and Your Spirit is the one carrying me through an evening I could not carry myself. Nothing has gone wrong tonight, and I am saying that out loud to You before I put the light off.
