He gets the shutter up at twenty to eight, the way he has for eleven years, and the noise of it going up is still the best sound of his day.
Then the trays. Cardamom, cumin, dried figs at the front where the light catches them, the good cinnamon at the back where he can see it. He wipes the scoop. He straightens the paper bags. The smell of the stall reaches the end of the aisle by ten past eight and there is nobody at the end of the aisle to smell it.
Three units down, the shutter has stayed shut since before the winter. Opposite, the fabric man comes in three days a week now instead of six. The escalator at the far end has been broken so long that people have learned another way into the building and never learned their way back.
By eleven he has counted. Not the takings. The people. He counts the ones who walk the whole length of the aisle, and today it is a number he could hold in one hand, and the pitch rent goes out on the same day of the month it has always gone out on.
He asked God about it in the spring. He remembers the morning, the specific one, standing behind these trays with both hands flat on the counter, asking plainly and not for the first time.
Nothing came. Not a no. Not a wait. Nothing at all, and the aisle stayed quiet, and he opened the shutter again the next morning at twenty to eight.
That is the thing nobody tells you how to survive. And you know it, or you would not have opened this page.

What I am not going to do with this
Let me tell you first what is not coming, so you can put your guard down and read the rest of it with your shoulders lower.
I am not going to explain the silence to you. I do not know why He did not answer you in the spring and I will not invent a reason and hand it to you as though it were revelation. I am not going to tell you what He is teaching you through it, or what season this is meant to be, or what He is building in a man while the aisle stays empty. Every one of those sentences is somebody making the quiet more comfortable for themselves by giving it a shape, and the guesswork is audible in every one, and enough of them have been said over you to last a lifetime.
And I am not going to hand you a key. There is no missing step. There is no unconfessed thing that would explain this if you could just find it, and the search for it has cost more good believers more sleep than the shortfall ever did.
What I will do is stand here and tell you what the written word actually says about a person in your position, and what it says is not what you have been braced for: you are near to Him and He is near to you, right now, in the quiet aisle, unanswered. Psalm 145:18 says the Lord is near to all who call on Him, and it does not add a clause about whether the call was answered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you calling for eleven years without a receipt.
The Bible has a voice for this and it is not a whisper
Open the Psalms at the twenty second one and read the second verse before anybody quotes you the famous parts.
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.Psalm 22:2
That is in the book. Not in a footnote and not as an example of poor faith. It is in the songbook of God's own people, kept, copied by hand, carried across centuries, sung in public.
And the man who quoted the opening line of that psalm out loud, at the top of His voice, in front of everybody, was Jesus. He took the words of a person who was crying out and not being answered and He made them His own on the cross. If that language had been a sign of a faith problem, it would have been the last mouth on earth to use it.
So take this as settled and stop arguing with yourself about it: you have permission from Scripture itself to say out loud that it was not answered. You are not being disloyal when you say it, you are quoting, and the same Spirit who preserved that verse for three thousand years is not standing over you now with a note about your tone.
His nearness is not a payment you failed to make
Here is the verdict the quiet has been handing you, and I want it named out loud, because a thing that gets named stops working underground.
The verdict says: He answers other people and He has stopped answering me, so something about me is the reason. Maybe I am not close enough. Maybe I was, and I let it go, and this is what that costs.
That is not what is happening and it never was. His nearness was never a payment you make and it was never a payment you could fall behind on. It is a gift, held in place by Christ and not by your consistency, and Romans 8:38 and 39 spend two verses listing everything in creation that cannot separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and the list is exhaustive on purpose so that nobody would go looking for the exception.
You have not been disqualified. That is finished ground, standing under your feet in an empty aisle at eleven in the morning, and the Holy Spirit living in you is Himself the proof, because God does not station His own Spirit in a house He has written off.
The move here is smaller than you think and it is not a technique.
Say out loud that it was not answered. Not to a friend. To Him, in the second person, in the plainest words you have. And then, and this is the part that carries the whole thing, do not leave.
You have the standing to speak to God like that, and it did not come from a good month at the stall. It came from being in Christ, and Hebrews 10:19 says you have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, which is a right of entry that does not lapse in a quiet season, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an honest sentence in an empty aisle something other than a man muttering to himself.
Staying is the whole answer you have got today. It is not a substitute for the one you asked for, and I will not pretend to you that it is.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where you are standing. The right to speak to God like this is yours in Christ and it was never issued on the strength of a good season. Scripture is the ground under every line, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely defiant, and what God does about the aisle and the rent is entirely His, however He answers, and nothing on this page pretends to know.
- Silence over this stall, you are real and I am not reading a verdict off you. Psalm 22:2 is in the written word in the plainest language there is, cried by day with no answer, and Jesus took that psalm into His own mouth in front of everybody. In the name of Jesus I say the true thing out loud, and I stay where I am.
- Conclusion I came to in the spring, you are not God's opinion of me. Scripture spends two whole verses listing everything in creation that cannot separate me from His love, and the list was made exhaustive so that I would stop hunting for the exception, and the Holy Spirit lives in me as the proof. I have not been disqualified, and there is no key I mislaid.
- Lord, You are near to everyone who calls on You, and Scripture puts no clause in that about whether the call was answered. I thank You, because You have kept me calling for eleven years without a single receipt, and that endurance was Your doing. I am saying the true thing to You now, and I am staying right here afterwards.
